Why is Sam Macomber running the Boston Marathon?

Sam Macomber will run Boston Marathon for St. Francis House

Sam Macomber is one of the five runners on our team who’s going to run the #BostonMarathon in six weeks! Hear why he’s so committed to run and raise money for St. Francis House.

I’m running for three reasons.

  1. I totally admire St Francis House’s unconditional open door policy.

Hundreds of meals are served every day with with an unwavering commitment to support for our guests. It starts with breakfast, and I’m proud to be a part of Waffle Wednesday, but I most admire offerings like the Next Step housing program, MAP job-skills training program, and mental health counseling that layer into continuous and comprehensive care.

  2. All my grandparents are inspirations for service.

My dad’s parents are long-term supporters of St Francis House, and they introduced me to the organization. My mom’s dad has been serving meals at a St Martin’s House in San Francisco for over 30 years; guests there call him “salad man.” Community involvement is important to me because of their examples.

  3. This is my athletic comeback.

Last winter I broke my leg in a crash before my final season of NCAA ski racing and spent 15 weeks on crutches. It was cool to walk again, really cool to ski again, and it will be liberating to finish Boston!
