Corporate partners reach out
We’re always excited when our corporate partners call and ask “how can we help?” Last month our friends at Gilbane connected with us to identify our needs for the winter and how they could put their group resources to work to help us. We responded coats, please! We quickly created some promotional materials for a corporate coat drive as well as provided a link where employees could donate financially to the coat drive.
The nuts and bolts of the drive
Originating in the Boston office with donation boxes located at project sites throughout the city, including Cengage, PTC, and 48 Boylston, this drive quickly turned into a divisional effort with project teams from Rhode Island and Connecticut contributing gently used coats to this effort.
This drive was initiated by UJIMA (oo-JEE-mah), Gilbane’s official Black/African American Employee Resource Group (ERG). The name UJIMA is taken from the third principle of Kwanzaa, focused on collective work and responsibility, and is based on the idea of building and maintaining our community together, making the problems of our sisters and brothers our own. Part of UJIMA’s mission is to provide mentorship opportunities, facilitate networking and learning (both inside and outside of Gilbane), and engage in various community outreach. It is hoped UJIMA’s efforts will help those in need throughout the duration of the winter.
At the conclusion of the drive several Gilbane staffers brought the many coats to St. Francis House where there were sorted and made ready for distribution the next day.
