Our Moving Ahead Program has over 1,500 alumni, all who are welcome to visit St. Francis House at any time and seek us for support and resource advice in perpetuity. The Alumni Resource Center bulletin board on the 4th floor hosts a new topic each month.
Alumni Resource Center: New Year, New Goals
People all over are writing down their New Years Resolutions this month, preparing to change all of their bad habits. They want to eat healthy, go to the gym, quit smoking, get organized, spend less money…the list goes on and on.
While having a resolution can be a powerful tool in the change process, research shows that only 8% will actually see those resolutions come to life.
The reason is simple. We want to change too many things, too quickly, without taking the necessary steps to create a plan for success.
If you set a goal, rather than a resolution, it allows you to better prepare yourself to make real changes.
You have complete control over the process. Take into account obstacles you will face along the way, and measure your progress.
One way begin to set your goals is using the S.M.A.R.T. process: Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Realistic, and Time-Bound.
Most importantly, have fun with your goals!
If you’re feeling stressed over accomplishing your goals, or not enjoying the process, step back and re-evaluate what you wanted to do. Share your goals with friends or family – you never know who can help along the way.
Stop by MAP this month to see more about SMART Goals. If you need help, or want some goal setting worksheets to get you started, chat with and request materials from Ashley Cilenti, Program Support Coordinator.
