If it’s “iHop Wednesday” at St. Francis House, you are sure to find volunteer Gerry in our kitchen, starting at 6:30am. Quick to smile, give an elbow-bump, or call our guests “Boss” or “Captain” when handing out breakfast and lunch, Gerry has been serving weekly for 6 years in our kitchen. The affectionately-known Wednesday Crew has formed tight friendships over the years.
Gerry’s calling to service in the St. Francis House kitchen has its origins in first hearing about St. Francis House through his church, St. Catherine’s of Sienna in Norwood. A person of strong faith, the passage from Matthew 25:35 encompasses it all for him: “For I was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave me drink, I was a stranger and you welcomed me”. As Gerry says, “that’s what this place is!”
When Gerry first came to us, he was semi-retired from a lifelong career as senior executive in the insurance industry. Now fully retired, his tireless support includes sharing the good work of St. Francis House with his corporate colleagues. Over the past five years, he’s raised more than $50,000 for the St. Francis House Annual Fund from insurance industry connections, recognizing the great value of corporate support for our programs. Gerry also hits the streets on foot throughout the Boston area, be it Somerville or Southie, asking local businesses to donate items for raffle prizes at the St. Francis House Shooze Cruise or other events. When not at St. Francis House, you might see Gerry out on a local golf course or enjoying the sunshine in Popponesset with wife Mary Jane.
Thanks Gerry, for your commitment and friendship.
