Community efforts to benefit the kitchen
Whole Foods Market Charles River Plaza hosted a broccoli drive in their store to benefit our kitchen. Shoppers participated in purchasing broccoli to be donated directly to St. Francis House, and the store provided a dollar-for-dollar match for each broccoli purchase up to 140 lbs!
Lunch support: broccoli and helping hands
The broccoli donations augmented today’s planned lunch meal of beef & broccoli over noodles, served with salad and fruit. In addition, we welcomed Whole Foods Charles River Plaza leadership team volunteers in the kitchen to help prep the lunch.
“It is amazing the difference a nutritious meal can make in the lives of the men and women served by St. Francis House,” said Mike Walker, Store Team Leader of Whole Foods Market Charles River Plaza. “We are proud to partner with St. Francis House and support their holistic approach to providing poor and homeless men and women with the programs and services they need.”
Not just a meal.
It’s true that St. Francis House is the only place in Boston where anyone can get a hot, nutritious lunch 365 days a year – no questions asked. But, we provide more than meals. For the men and women coming to St. Francis House each day, we serve as a one-stop shop for support and services.
Every day, St. Francis House serves 500 guests, and to each of those guests we are many different things.
For some guests, we may be helping to provide them with basic, human needs: a meal, a shower and a change of clothes, a place of refuge – physical or emotional – from the streets. For others, St. Francis House is providing employment training, counseling, case management and access to medical and healthcare services, including rehabilitative and substance abuse disorder services, and affordable housing. And for some guests, we are providing everything from a meal to housing.
