Shelter Renovation Updates

For 40 years, St. Francis House—Massachusetts’ largest day shelter—has been committed to helping its guests discover multiple pathways to recovery, all under one roof. Each day our dedicated staff utilizes the shelter space to move people from homelessness toward positive and sustainable changes in their housing, income, and behavioral health stability.

Located in downtown Boston, St. Francis House was originally an office tower built over a century ago. Long-overdue changes to the interior are needed to bring our facilities up-to-date and to better serve the several hundred people
who cross our threshold each day. With that in mind, the renovation will modernize our century-old building to better serve the several hundred people who rely on our services each day.

This project will include a complete overhaul of the first four floors, introducing a new dining experience and assembly hall, a modern case management suite, a renovated clothing distribution center, an art therapy room, and a new healthcare clinic in partnership with Boston Healthcare for the Homeless. Additionally, we will add a new ADA-compliant elevator and update all existing elevators to enhance accessibility. Find updates about the project below.
