Meet Cody: Faces of St. Francis House

Cody’s journey is a powerful testament to his resilience and inner strength. Originally from New Hampshire, Cody had a strained relationship with his family and struggled with undiagnosed autism. After residing in Florida for several years, he made the bold choice to leave a challenging situation, where drug usage and few opportunities for growth negatively impacted him. Boston seemed like a fresh start — its reputable healthcare system, inclusive queer community, and accessible public transit were all promising, but despite his optimism, Cody found himself unhoused the moment he stepped off the bus.

In those early days, Cody relied on a friend for shelter, eventually securing a spot at Pine Street Inn. After many difficult months battling mental health challenges, he learned about St. Francis House (SFH). Starting with visits for meals, Cody quickly realized that SFH offered more than just food, and one year ago, he took his first steps beyond the dining room, exploring additional services and embarking on a transformative journey.

Aaron, a clinician at SFH, met with Cody every Wednesday for a year, helping him confront deep-rooted emotional struggles and learn how to navigate his emotions. With Neysa, a compassionate SFH staff member who offers him warmth and acceptance without judgment, Cody has found an unshakeable support system. “She’s my rock,” he says. “Neysa is honestly a godsend. I go out of my way to come here in the mornings just to see her.”

Cody began utilizing job search resources on SFH’s fourth floor, and after several temporary jobs, he now works at a nearby bakery— a position he’s deeply proud of. He aspires to one day secure a job at Logan Airport or with the MBTA. Though he has struggled with substance use, Cody utilizes harm-reduction techniques and has recently started enjoying time alone, discovering a newfound comfort in his own company.

Each step forward is not without its challenges, but Cody’s empathy, resilience, and determination to set himself up for success have kept him on track. Above all, he is determined to never return to the streets. “I feel safe here, I feel heard here, I have support here — this is where I feel safe when I feel I’m not being safe,” he reflects on SFH’s impact. With a caseworker’s help, Cody is now working to secure his own housing and is focused on moving forward.

Cody’s journey has not been easy, but it’s been transformative. He reminds himself daily: “In order to get what I want, I have no problem working for it.” Through the unwavering support of SFH and his own determination, Cody is reclaiming his life, one courageous step at a time.
